III.       COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course provides an in-depth coverage of the various concepts and terminology that will be applicable during the remainder of the student's business education. Topics will include pioneering ideas in innovation and change, diversity, adaptive organizations, competitive environment, culture, ethics, decision making, the functions of management, strategies, leadership, teamwork, and management information systems.

 

IV.       COURSE OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES:

 

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

           

1.         Compare and contrast the ever changing environment of the business world including diversity and the dynamics of workplace change.

2.         Examine the ethical practices and social responsibilities of today’s business world.

3.         Evaluate the various areas of business while comparing their interrelatedness.

4.         Recognize the importance of quality decision making through he use of relevant information.

5.         Understand the importance of the functions of management and the part each skill plays in making good ethical decisions.

 

V.        TEACHING STRATEGY:

 

Classroom discussions, case studies, and in-class activities will be of major importance, as they will help tie theory to practice.  Students are expected to be actively engaged in the class, in order to pass it, you must attend and contribute to it.  To prepare for the in-class work, reading of textbook chapters and assignments must be accomplished prior to class.

There will be 5 weekly exams beginning on thursday of week 2, and following every other thursdays (weeks 2,4,6,8,10). You will be allowed to drop your lowest exam score of the 5. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS ALLOWED. If you miss an exam for ANY reason, this will be the score you will drop. If you miss more than one exam, a score of zero will be recorded for any exam missed after the 1st missed exam and the zeros WILL count.

Attendance:

 

Students may earn bonus points for attendance, however when a given number of absences is accrued the student will be assessed points.  The student attendance/absence policy is noted below.

 

The student begins with 30 points.  These are participation points. Since the student must be present to participate, the points will be calculated as follows:

 

First absence student loses                              0 points

Second absence student loses                                     0 points

Third absence student loses                          10 points

Fourth absence student loses                          5 points

Fifth absence student loses                            5 points

Sixth absence student loses                           5 points

Seventh absence student loses                       5 points

 

*NOTE--Beginning with the eighth absence the student will lose 25 points per day.
